Prior to start your measurement you have to consider the following essential steps:

  • Recommended to use a steel or laser tape measure. Measurement are in imperial units (1 foot =12 inches), Unit conversion is not recommendable. (ex: – mm to inches)
  • You must measure all windows, even though they may appear to be identical. Do not assume that all your windows are the same size.
  • Shutters/Blinds can be mounted inside or outside your window frame. Before starting the measurement, you have to decide which mount is suitable for your window.

Inside mount

Shutter Width
The shutters are mounted inside the window frame.
  1. First you should make sure your window opening is deep enough for an inside mount.
  2. Measure the existing frame depth, if your frame depth is less than 2 inches, you have to select an outside mount.
  3. Measure the width of the window opening at the points where the shutters will be mounted. You will measure down to the nearest 1 /8 inches Measure width at the top, middle, and bottom of the window from the left side to the right side as shown in the picture below.
  4. Record the smallest width of the three measurements.
  5. This will be the width you will order.
Shutter Height
  1. You will follow the same instructions for the height. Measure the exact height (top to bottom) of the window opening in three places such as left side, middle, and right side.
  2. Record the smallest height of the three measurements
  3. This will be the height you will order

Outside mount

Shutter Width

The shutters are extending beyond the window frame. If your frame depth is less than 2 inches, you must select an outside mount.

  1. Measure for the shutter width at the top, middle, and bottom of the outside edge of the window frame from the left side to the right side.
  2. Record the largest width of the 3 measurements
  3. This will be the width you will order.
Shutter Height
  1. Measure for the shutter height at the left side, middle, and right side of the window from the top of the window outside edge to the bottom outside edge.
  2. Record the largest height of the three measurements
  3. This will be the height you will order

General Information

In general, Polyvinyl shutters have two different names based on the louver size. Shutters with louver size 2.5 inch ,3.5/4.5 inch called as California shutters and plantation shutters respectively. Shutters are generally be made up of a shutter panel hinged to a frame. The panel itself consists of louvers with different sizes, which rotate open and closed; stiles running vertically on the sides; and rails running horizontally on the top and bottom. Panels over 46 inches will include a divider rail, which adds strength and support to your shutter panels, and allows you to open the top louvers while keeping the bottom ones closed. Tilts bar which is connecting the louvers can be installed in front or rear of the shutters at middle or side.
